After handing over the CEO reins of Stack Overflow to Prashanth Chandrasekar, Joel has found himself busier than ever, now serving as chairman of three tech companies and enjoying a fresh perspective on leadership.
Stack Overflow: A Smooth Transition
Prashanth Chandrasekar has settled in as the new CEO of Stack Overflow, and Joel describes the transition as both enlightening and satisfying. He still joins customer calls and has weekly meetings with Prashanth, but the reduced workload has freed up significant time. Watching Prashanth reorganize the company—for the better—has been a humbling experience. "It’s really satisfying to realize that the best possible outcome for me is if he proves what a bad CEO I was by doing a much better job," Joel notes. Life in Manhattan’s Premier NORC
Joel lives in Manhattan’s Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC), a neighborhood where many older adults reside, but he insists he’s far from retired. His days are packed with meetings, mentoring, and exploring new ventures. He even has a two-year-old dog named Cooper, who he jokes could serve as a web app mascot. The sabbatical has given him time to reflect on what he truly enjoys: building communities and platforms that empower developers.
Glitch: The Friendly Community for Building the Web
One of the companies Joel chairs is Glitch, formerly known as Fog Creek Software. Under CEO Anil Dash, Glitch has grown to host millions of apps and has raised significant funding to accelerate that growth. The platform targets developers who want a simplified programming environment—no need for Git branches or complex deployment pipelines. "In every era, there has to be some kind of simplified environment for the quiet majority of developers who just want to write code and have it run," Joel explains. Glitch fills that niche, offering a friendly, collaborative space for building web apps.
HASH: Open Source Simulation Platform
The third company, HASH, is still somewhat under the radar but recently shared details online. HASH is building an open source platform for agent-based simulations. This type of modeling is ideal for problems where you know how individual agents behave but can’t easily predict the aggregate outcome. For example, a city planner might simulate traffic to justify a new bus line. Instead of assuming each bus removes 50 cars—which oversimplifies commuter decisions—HASH allows modeling each commuter’s behavior. "You can actually simulate the behavior of every agent, like Cities: Skylines does, and figure out the results," Joel says. Then planners can test thousands of bus routes to see which reduce traffic.
This simulation approach is computationally intensive but works even when traditional formulas fall short. HASH aims to make such modeling accessible to researchers, urban planners, and businesses. The platform is open source, inviting community contributions to expand its capabilities.
Lessons from the Sidelines
Joel’s sabbatical has taught him how much he didn’t know about running medium-sized companies. Watching new leaders like Prashanth and Anil take charge has been a masterclass in delegation and trust. He emphasizes that stepping back doesn’t mean stepping away from impact. For founders considering a similar transition, Joel advises embracing the role of chairman or advisor, focusing on the big picture while letting others execute. "The best outcome is when your successor outperforms you," he says.
